The other day my husband and I were shopping at Target (go figure!) We had decided that for the 4th of July we would have a movie date night. So we went searching for all of the necessities. A movie (ha!), popcorn, nachos, and candy. We were going ALL OUT! As we went through the food section I heard a little girl shout to her mom, “It’s on sale, mom. Can I get it?” I don’t know what “it” was, but all the sudden I was stopped in my tracks. I started to think…this is how we live. We search for the best deal, the least expensive, the best thing that takes the least effort. We want it all, but we don’t want to pay the full price.
Did you know Jesus paid full price?
There was no deal involved.
He didn’t just choose the parts of God’s plan that He liked and left the rest behind.
He was all in.
If you read in the bible right before Jesus dies on the cross, He is in the Garden of Gethsemane and asks God more than once if there is any other way to save the world without Him having to die on the cross.
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” – Matthew 26:39
He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” – Matthew 26:42
But, knowing that in order to fulfill the Father’s plan He would have no other option but to give His life, He does.
As I thought about this it made me a little sad. I know I can be the best bargain shopper. (Just ask my husband. It drives him crazy sometimes!) I try to get the most for as little as possible. My favorite groceries to buy are the “Buy One, Get One” at Publix. I mean, our meals each week are based on BOGO! Somebody? Anybody?
But, if I’m being completely honest I can live this way in my relationship with Jesus too.
I know. Crazy, huh!?
I am fully aware that He gave His life for me. I know He died so I could live. I know God loves me and never leaves me. But, there are times when I am supposed to be serving Him, but I’m tired. There are people I should be calling, but I don’t want to talk on the phone. I should be reading His word and praying, but my to-do list is a mile long and the sooner I get done, the sooner I can relax!
Have you ever been there?
Just me? Ok.
Here’s a thought….
If Jesus gave EVERYTHING to die on a cross to save us so we could spend eternity in Heaven with God, isn’t that His way of giving us the best deal we could ever imagine?
See…when we give Him our life, He takes ALL our sins and gives us His righteousness.
Then He calls it even.
Jesus paid FULL PRICE so we could receive eternal life for FREE.
THAT’S A DEAL!
So, being able to serve His people and spend time with Him is a gift we shouldn’t take for granted.
